Meanings

  1. external, from outside
  2. foreign (from another country)

Usage

Khareji comes from Standard Arabic. In Tunisia it is used in a somewhat formal register: news, politics, sport, administration. It applies to what is outside a place, as in "el-beb el-khareji" (the outer entrance door). It also describes what comes from abroad, as in "tadakhoul khareji" (foreign interference). The feminine is "kharejiya". In everyday conversation, to say "outside" people prefer the adverb "barra". For "foreigner" referring to a person, "berrani" is used instead.

سكّر الباب الخارجي قبل ما ترقد

sakker el beb el khareji 9bal ma tor9od
