kofr كفر

Tunisian Derja · noun

“kofr” (كفر) is a noun in Tunisian Derja meaning unbelief, disbelief.

Meanings

  1. unbelief, disbelief
  2. blasphemy, outrage

Usage

Kofr means unbelief or the rejection of faith, in religious vocabulary. In conversation, it is also used hyperbolically for something judged outrageous or absurd: "hedha kofr!" (that's outrageous!), for example about an exorbitant price. The verb kfar, in the sense of "to exasperate" (kfartni, you pushed me to my limit), belongs to the same family. The word stays serious in a religious context: accusing someone of kofr is a grave matter and can shock.

Example

عشرين دينار على كيلو طماطم؟ هذا كفر!

3echrin dinar 3la kilo tmatem? hedha kofr!

“Twenty dinars for a kilo of tomatoes? That's outrageous!”
