lou7 لوح

Tunisian Derja · noun

“lou7” (لوح) is a noun in Tunisian Derja meaning wood (material).

Meanings

  1. wood (material)
  2. plank
  3. Quranic writing board

Usage

Lou7 first means wood as a material. One says "mghorfa mta3 lou7" or "mghorfa lou7" for a wooden ladle. The word also means a plank and, traditionally, the wooden board on which children learned the Quran at the kouttab. It should not be confused with the verb "lawwa7" (to throw away, to toss), which is spelled the same in Arabic: "lawwa7 el mekla" means "throw away the food". Context and pronunciation settle it.

Example

المغرفة هاذي متاع لوح

el mghorfa hedhi mta3 lou7

“This ladle is made of wood.”
