mil ميل

Tunisian Derja · noun

“mil” (ميل) is a noun in Tunisian Derja meaning mile (unit of distance).

Meanings

  1. mile (unit of distance)

Usage

Mil means the mile, the Anglo-Saxon unit of length. It is used mainly when talking about foreign countries, translated films or stories, or at sea for the nautical mile. For everyday distances, people almost always count in kilometres (kilou, kilouмètr). The word stays invariable after a number: one says 3icharin mil (twenty miles). To locate a place, it is used with 3la bo3d (at a distance of) or ba3d (after). Pitfall: it is not the number "thousand", which is alf.

Example

الدار متاعو على بعد ميل من البحر.

eddar mte3ou 3la bo3d mil mel b7ar.

“His house is a mile from the sea.”
