miledi ميلادي

Tunisian Derja · adjective

“miledi” (ميلادي) is an adjective in Tunisian Derja meaning Gregorian, of the Gregorian calendar.

Meanings

  1. Gregorian, of the Gregorian calendar
  2. my birth (in "3id miledi")

Usage

Miledi mainly describes what belongs to the Gregorian calendar, as opposed to the Hijri calendar: ech-chhar el-miledi, el-3am el-miledi, ras el-3am el-miledi for New Year's Day on 1 January. The register is rather formal or administrative, but the word is common in announcements, on the radio and in conversation whenever a date is specified. Pitfall: the same form can also be read as "my birth", hence 3id miledi, "my birthday". Only context distinguishes the adjective from the noun followed by the possessive.

Example

الدروس تبدا في أول الشهر الميلادي

edrous tebda fi awwel ech-chhar el-miledi

“Classes start at the beginning of the Gregorian month.”
