nadem نادم

Tunisian Derja · adjective

“nadem” (نادم) is an adjective in Tunisian Derja meaning regretful, full of regret.

Meanings

  1. regretful, full of regret
  2. remorseful

Usage

Nadem describes someone who regrets an act or a choice. The feminine is nadma, the plural nadmin. The object of the regret is given with 3la ("nadem 3la...") or with a clause introduced by 3lech or eli. The negative form is very common: "manich nadem" (I don't regret it), often to assert a choice, for example a political one. The word belongs to the everyday register, neither slangy nor formal. For an English speaker, the point to remember is that it is an adjective, not a verb: "I regret" is said "ena nadem" or expressed with the verb nedem.
