noum نوم

Tunisian Derja · noun

“noum” (نوم) is a noun in Tunisian Derja meaning sleep.

Meanings

  1. sleep
  2. act of sleeping
  3. sleepiness

Usage

Noum is the usual word for sleep and for the act of sleeping. The corresponding verb is rgued (to sleep), which is more frequent than forms derived from noum. A typical construction makes sleep the subject of the sentence: "ma jenich ennoum" means "I couldn't sleep", literally "sleep didn't come to me". You also say "3andi ennoum" or "fiya ennoum" for "I'm sleepy". "Noum 3mi9" means deep sleep. Don't look for a word-for-word equivalent of "I'm sleepy": it is the sleep that is "in" the person.

Example

البارح ما جانيش النوم بكلّ.

lbere7 ma jenich ennoum bkol.

“Last night I didn't sleep a wink.”
