rejim ريجيم

Tunisian Derja · noun

“rejim” (ريجيم) is a noun in Tunisian Derja meaning diet, dietary regimen.

Meanings

  1. diet, dietary regimen
  2. accursed, damned (in "chitan rjim")

Usage

Rejim is a borrowing from French "régime", well integrated into derja and used only in the dietary sense. The usual construction is 3mal rejim ("to go on a diet"): na3mel rejim, ena fi rejim ("I'm on a diet"). It is used for weight loss, but also for a diet prescribed by a doctor, for example salt-free or sugar-free. Pitfall for an English speaker: the word does not mean a political regime, which is nidham. In family meals, turning down a second helping with ena fi rejim remains a very common excuse.

Example

ما تزيدليش، راني عامل ريجيم.

ma tzidlich, rani 3amel rejim.

“Don't give me more, I'm on a diet.”
