rhib رهيب
Tunisian Derja · adjective
“rhib” (رهيب) is an adjective in Tunisian Derja meaning awesome, excellent, impressive.
Meanings
- awesome, excellent, impressive
- terrible, frightening, huge
Usage
Rhib is an adjective. Literally, it means "terrible, formidable". In young people's informal speech, it is used mostly as a compliment: "it's awesome, great". The shift is the same as in French with "terrible" or "de ouf". It is used alone as an exclamation ("rhib!") or after a noun: "film rhib", "mekla rhiba". In journalistic or sports language, it keeps its sense of intensity: "terrible, enormous pressure". The feminine is rhiba. The pitfall for an English speaker is to see a negative nuance every time, when it is most often praise.
