Meanings

Usage

Rjouli is the adjective derived from rjoula, "virility, a man's conduct". It describes what belongs to a man: a voice, a bearing, a style. It is also said of a woman whose bearing or character is judged masculine. It is used above all as moral praise: a rjouli gesture is a loyal, courageous act in which one keeps one's word. The feminine is rjouliya, often with a feminine noun such as haraka (gesture) or kelma (word). The register is familiar and warm. An English speaker should not reduce it to the biological sense of "masculine": most often it carries a value of honor.
