Tunisian Derja · verb

“salla” (صلى) is a verb in Tunisian Derja meaning to perform the ritual prayer.

Meanings

  1. to perform the ritual prayer
  2. to invoke blessings on the Prophet

Usage

Salla refers to performing the Muslim ritual prayer. The present is ysalli ("ysalli fel jem3", he prays at the mosque), and the corresponding noun is slet or sla (the prayer). The specific prayer is often named: "salla el sbo7", "salla el 3asr". "Salli 3la nnbi" (invoke blessings on the Prophet) is used to calm someone down or before an important statement. For a personal prayer, a request to God, one says rather d3a (to invoke): do not translate "to pray for someone" with salla.

Example

صلّى الصبح ومشى للخدمة.

salla esbo7 w mcha lel khedma.
