“sallem” (سلم) is a verb in Tunisian Derja meaning to greet, say hello.

Meanings

  1. to greet, say hello
  2. to hand over, deliver
  3. to give oneself up

Usage

Sallem, with the middle consonant doubled, means first of all "to greet". It is constructed with 3la: sallem 3la jarou, "he greeted his neighbour". The formula sallemli 3la..., "give my regards to...", is very common at the end of a conversation. The verb also means "to hand over, deliver": sallem el khedma, "he handed in the work". Sallem nafsou means "he gave himself up", to the police for example. Do not confuse it with slem, the greeting itself, or with the first name Salem.

Example

sallemli 3la ommek barcha.

“Give my best to your mother.”
