Usage

Sénya refers to an irrigated garden or orchard, often surrounded by walls or hedges, where vegetables and fruit trees are grown thanks to a well. The plural is swani. The word belongs to rural and peri-urban vocabulary. It appears in place names, such as Sénia Erouissi or Sanit…, and in the proverb "dar bla kbir kif sénya bla bir": a house without an elder is like a garden without a well. City dwellers also use it nostalgically to talk about the family garden. The word has nothing to do with "sénia", the copper tray, which is called sniyya.
