t7at تحطط

Tunisian Derja · verb

“t7at” (تحطط) is a verb in Tunisian Derja meaning to be put, to be placed.

Meanings

  1. to be put, to be placed
  2. to be set, installed somewhere

Usage

Passive form of the verb ḥaṭṭ "to put, to place". Used when you don't want or need to say who did the action: an object "was put" somewhere, someone "was placed" in a post or location. The typical construction is t7att followed by a locative preposition (fi "in", 3la "on", qodddem "in front of"). Present tense: yit7att, tit7att. Common, neutral register. Pitfall for an English speaker: the Arabic spelling may double the ṭ (تحطط), but in speech you hear a single long consonant, t7att.

Example

الكتاب تحطّ في بلاصتو.

el ktéb t7att fi blastou.

“The book was put back in its place.”
