ta9alid تقاليد

Tunisian Derja · noun

“ta9alid” (تقاليد) is a noun in Tunisian Derja meaning traditions, customs.

Meanings

  1. traditions, customs

Usage

Ta9alid is a word from standard Arabic, but it is fully used in derja to talk about family, regional or national customs: weddings, festivals, traditional clothing, cuisine. It is almost always used in the plural and readily pairs with 3adet ("customs") in the phrase 3adet w ta9alid. The register is neutral, a bit more formal in the media. It often appears in discourse of identity pride or, on the contrary, to criticize practices seen as outdated. The singular ta9lid is rare in this sense and rather means "imitation".

Example

العرس في بلادنا عندو تقاليد ماتتبدلش.

el 3ers fi bledna 3andou ta9alid matetbaddelch.

“Weddings in our country follow traditions that don't change.”
