Meanings

  1. imitation

Usage

Taqlīd (often pronounced tagliīd) means above all "imitation". It is used in expressions such as taqlīd aʿmā, "blind imitation", or about someone who copies another person. In commerce, the word describes a counterfeit item: hādhā taqlīd, mūch original, "it's a copy, not the original". The meaning "tradition" exists mainly in the plural taqālīd, in the expression ʿādāt w taqālīd, "customs and traditions". In the singular, it is therefore rare to use it for a tradition.
