tarif تاريف

Tunisian Derja · noun

“tarif” (تاريف) is a noun in Tunisian Derja meaning rate, fixed price.

Meanings

  1. rate, fixed price
  2. taxi fare rate

Usage

Tarif is a borrowing from French, fully integrated into derja. It is used for a price set in advance: transport, a consultation, admission, a subscription. It appears mostly in phrases modelled on French, such as "demi tarif" ("dumi tarif", half price) or "double tarif". The latter notably refers to the night rate for taxis, which people readily dispute. For a price negotiated at the market, soum is used instead. Tarif applies to an official or posted price scale.

Example

“After midnight, the taxi charges the double rate.”
