tata تتا

Tunisian Derja · noun

“tata” (تتا) is a noun in Tunisian Derja meaning aunt, auntie.

Meanings

  1. aunt, auntie
  2. lady (child's term for a woman)
  3. kindergarten teacher

Usage

Tata is a well-integrated loanword, used in Tunisia to mean an aunt, especially in families that mix derja and French. Children also use it to politely address an adult woman: a neighbor, a friend of their mother or the kindergarten teacher. The register is informal and affectionate. It is often placed before the first name, for example tata Samia. This term coexists with the Arabic words 3amti, for the paternal aunt, and khalti, for the maternal aunt, which remain more precise and more traditional.

Example

تتا سامية جات تزورنا اليوم.

tata samia jet tzourna lyoum.

“Auntie Samia came to visit us today.”
