tghayer تغير

Tunisian Derja · verb

“tghayer” (تغير) is a verb in Tunisian Derja meaning to change, be transformed.

Meanings

  1. to change, be transformed
  2. to go off, deteriorate

Usage

Tghayyer is intransitive: it is the thing or person that changes by itself, as in ezzman tghayyer (times have changed) or tghayyert barcha (you have changed a lot). For the transitive sense "to change something", use ghayyer or, more commonly, beddel. In everyday speech, tbeddel is often preferred for "to change", tghayyer having a slightly more formal or stronger nuance, often with an idea of deterioration: wejhou tghayyer (his face changed, he turned pale or got angry). It is also said of food that is starting to go off.
