thawra ثورة
Tunisian Derja · noun
“thawra” (ثورة) is a noun in Tunisian Derja meaning revolution, uprising.
Meanings
- revolution, uprising
- the Tunisian revolution (with the article)
Usage
Thawra means "revolution" in the political sense. Used alone with the article, ethawra most often refers, in Tunisia, to the revolution that overthrew Ben Ali. People thus speak of qbal ethawra and ba3d ethawra, "before" and "after the revolution". Before a complement, the form changes to thawrit (construct state), as in thawrit el karama, "the revolution of dignity". The word also belongs to the media register, for example thawra moudhadda, "counter-revolution". The word thawra evokes a popular uprising. For a technical revolution, the same word is used, but in a more formal register.
Example
بعد الثورة تبدلت برشة حاجات
ba3d ethawra tbadlet barcha 7ajet
