thour طهور

Tunisian Derja · noun

“thour” (طهور) is a noun in Tunisian Derja meaning circumcision.

Meanings

  1. circumcision
  2. circumcision celebration

Usage

Thour refers to the circumcision of a boy and, even more often, to the family celebration that goes with it: guests, music, ululations (zgharit), money given to the child. People say "3mal thour l weldou", "he had his son circumcised, he held the celebration". To speak of the child, the participle mtahher, "circumcised", is used. The word is common and neutral. It is worth knowing that it refers as much to the social event as to the medical act, much like "wedding" for 3ers.

Example

عزمونا على طهور ولدهم السبت

3azmouna 3la thour weldhom es-sebt

“They invited us to their son's circumcision celebration on Saturday.”
