trabba تربى
Tunisian Derja · verb
“trabba” (تربى) is a verb in Tunisian Derja meaning to be raised, grow up (somewhere).
Meanings
- to be raised, grow up (somewhere)
- to be brought up with values
Usage
Trabba is the passive-reflexive form of rabba ("to raise"). It is used to say where or with whom someone grew up: trabba fi dar jaddou ("he was raised at his grandfather's house"). It is also used to talk about the values someone received: trabba 3la… ("he was brought up in…"). The expression ma trabbech, "he wasn't raised", is a common reproach: it means the person is ill-mannered. The word belongs to the everyday, neutral register. Do not confuse it with rabba, the active form, which refers to the person who raises someone.
Example
