vista فيستة

Tunisian Derja · noun

“vista” (فيستة) is a noun in Tunisian Derja meaning jacket, blazer.

Meanings

  1. jacket, blazer
  2. light coat

Usage

Vista is a very common adapted loanword for a jacket, whether part of a suit or a more casual one. The word is feminine: vista jdida, "a new jacket". In the plural, you hear vistet. It combines with the verbs lbes ("to put on") and na77a ("to take off"). For a thick coat, kabbout or manto is preferred. Pitfall for an English speaker: vista has nothing to do with the word "view" or "panorama". It is simply the Tunisian pronunciation of the French word "veste".

Example

إلبس الفيستة راهو الجو بارد

elbes el vista raho ejjaw bared

“Put on your jacket, it's cold.”
