watan وطن

Tunisian Derja · noun

“watan” (وطن) is a noun in Tunisian Derja meaning homeland.

Meanings

  1. homeland
  2. nation, country

Usage

Watan is a formal-register word, taken from standard Arabic, but very present in derja in political, patriotic and activist speech, as well as in online comments: 7obb el watan (love of the homeland), khiyanet el watan (betrayal of the homeland). In everyday conversation, people more readily say bled when talking about their country or region. Watan therefore carries an emotional or ideological charge that bled does not. It is often found with the article: el watan. It corresponds better to "homeland" than to "country".

Example

نحكي عالدين وال وطن و كلامي ماهوش متناقض ,

na7ki 3addin wil watan ou klemi mehouch mitne9idh ,

“I talk about religion and the homeland, and what I say isn't contradictory.”
