wfe وفى

Tunisian Derja · verb

“wfe” (وفى) is a verb in Tunisian Derja meaning to end, come to an end.

Meanings

  1. to end, come to an end
  2. to run out, be used up
  3. to be fulfilled (fate, deadline)

Usage

Wfé (imperfect youfa) is a very common intransitive verb: it is the thing that "finishes", not the person who finishes something. One says wfet el 7keya, "the story is over", or wféw les taxis, "there are no more taxis". In the negative, ma wfech means "it never ends". For a stock, money or bread, it means "there is none left". To say "to finish a job", kammel is used instead. The expression wfé el mektoub evokes the end set by fate, often in the sense of death.
