wsiya وصية

Tunisian Derja · noun

“wsiya” (وصية) is a noun in Tunisian Derja meaning will, last wishes.

Meanings

  1. will, last wishes
  2. instruction entrusted to someone
  3. errand, message to pass on

Usage

Wsiya refers first of all to the last wishes left by a deceased person, written or spoken. People say "khalla wsiya" (he left a will) or "kteb wsiya". The word is also used more broadly for a recommendation or instruction given to someone: "3tah wsiya" can mean that he gave him a recommendation, or entrusted him with something to do or to pass on. The corresponding verb is "wassa" (to recommend, to charge someone with). Context settles whether the legal or family sense of a will is meant, or the more everyday sense of an instruction given before someone leaves.

Example

جدي كتب وصية وقسم فيها الأرض على صغارو

jeddi kteb wsiya w qassem fiha l'ardh 3la sghirou

“My grandfather wrote a will and divided the land among his children in it.”
