Tunisian Derja · expression
“yaweld” (ياولد) is an expression in Tunisian Derja meaning O son of… (apostrophe of belonging).
Meanings
- O son of… (apostrophe of belonging)
- hey, my boy (form of address)
Usage
Ya weld is a form of address made up of the vocative ya and weld ("boy, son"). It is mainly used to address someone by linking them to a place or a group, as a sign of pride or sympathy: ya weld tounes ("O son of Tunisia"), ya weld bledi ("you who are from my country"). This construction is common in comments supporting an artist or an athlete. Used on its own, it can be used to hail a boy, but one then more often says ya wlidi or ya weldi ("my boy, my son"). The corresponding feminine is ya bent.
Example
ربي يوفقك يا ولد بلادي.
rabbi ywaf9ek ya weld bledi.
“May God grant you success, you who are from my country.”
