zour زور

Tunisian Derja · noun

“zour” (زور) is a noun in Tunisian Derja meaning falsehood, perjury.

Meanings

  1. falsehood, perjury
  2. visit! (imperative of zār)

Usage

As a noun, zour means "falsehood, lie". It is found almost only in fixed expressions: chhédet zour, "false testimony", and chéhed zour, "false witness". The latter is also used figuratively, especially in politics, for someone who witnesses an injustice without reacting. The same form is also the imperative of the verb zār / yzour, "to visit": zour ommek, "visit your mother". Context decides between the two meanings. Pitfall for an English speaker: zour does not mean "fake" in the sense of a counterfeit object. For that, say mdallas or ta9lid.

Example

عطى شهادة زور في المحكمة

3ta chhédet zour fel ma7kma

“He gave false testimony in court.”
