zriba زريبة
Tunisian Derja · noun
“zriba” (زريبة) is a noun in Tunisian Derja meaning animal pen, fold.
Meanings
- animal pen, fold
- filthy, messy place (pejorative)
Usage
Zriba refers to the pen where sheep, goats or donkeys are kept, often closed off with branches or a low wall. The plural is zrayeb. Figuratively, the word contemptuously describes a dirty, disordered or badly run place, such as a hospital, an administration or a house. One then readily adds 7achekom, "with all due respect", because people are being compared to animals. In political discourse, the image of the penned flock denounces treating citizens like livestock. Do not confuse it with zarreb, "to hurry".
