3in عين
Algerian Darja · noun
“3in” (عين) is a noun in Algerian Darja meaning eye.
Meanings
- eye
- spring, water source
- evil eye
Usage
3in first means the eye. The common plural is 3inin, and the form 3inaya is often used for "my two eyes". The word also means "spring", which explains its presence in many Algerian place names beginning with Aïn. In the expression 3in (or 3in hassoud), it refers to the evil eye, a belief very much present in daily life. The phrase 3la rassi w 3ini ("on my head and my eye") expresses willing acceptance. Do not confuse it with the verb 3ayyen, which has a different form.
Example
عيني تحرقني
3ini tahraqni
“My eye is burning.”
