Meanings

  1. to count, calculate

Usage

Hseb / yahseb first means "to count": money, days, points. In the figurative sense, it means "to believe" or "to take for". Hsebtek mcha ("I thought you had left") and yahseb rouhou ("he thinks he's somebody") are very common expressions. The same root gives hsab ("account") and the expression ma 3andou hsab ("it doesn't count"). The preposition hasab ("according to"), frequent in writing and in comments, belongs to a more formal register. Note: in writing without vowels, the verb form and the preposition look the same.
