ba9i باقي

Algerian Darja · adverb

“ba9i” (باقي) is an adverb in Algerian Darja meaning still, yet.

Meanings

  1. still, yet
  2. the rest, what remains

Usage

Baqi means "still, yet" and marks that a situation continues. It is used like its more frequent synonym "mazal": "baqi ma jach" (he still hasn't come), "baqi hna" (he's still here). A pronoun can be added: baqi, baqya, baqyin. As a noun or adjective, "el-baqi" means the rest: "el-baqi 3lik" (the rest is for you). The pitfall is to translate it as the verb "to remain" when it is used as an adverb. It also appears in the expression "baqi ma…" (not yet).

Example

باقي ما جاش خويا

ba9i ma jach khouya

“My brother still hasn't come.”
