be9i باقي
Tunisian Derja · adjective
“be9i” (باقي) is an adjective in Tunisian Derja meaning remaining; the rest (el be9i).
Meanings
- remaining; the rest (el be9i)
- still, yet (with negation)
Usage
Be9i means "remaining". With the article, el be9i means "the rest": el be9i 3lik, "the rest is up to you to do". The feminine is be9ya and the plural be9yin. The word also works as an adverb before a negated verb: be9i ma fhemtch, "I still haven't understood". It can also indicate what remains to be done or paid: be9i 3chra dinars. For an English speaker, the pitfall is the very frequent sense of "still, yet", which has nothing to do with the idea of a remainder.
Example
حتّى احنا ما عننا كان شويّة الشمس ال باقي يفتح الله
7etta a7na ma 3anna ken chweyet echemes el be9i yefte7 allah
“We only have a little sun too; as for the rest, may God provide.”
