dars درس
Algerian Darja · noun
“dars” (درس) is a noun in Algerian Darja meaning lesson, class.
Meanings
- lesson, class
- lesson learned from experience
Usage
Dars means a lesson or a class, at school, at the mosque or in a training course. The plural is drous; one says drous khassa for private tutoring, which is very common in Algeria. Figuratively, dars is the lesson one draws from an experience: khdit dars (I learned my lesson) or ʿtah dars (he taught him a lesson), including in the sense of "putting someone in their place". For the verb "to study", Darja mostly uses qra and not a verb derived from dars. The word is used in all registers.
