din دين
Algerian Darja · noun
“din” (دين) is a noun in Algerian Darja meaning religion.
Meanings
- religion
- debt
Usage
Din means above all "religion". It is found in ddin (the religion), ddin l'islam (the Muslim religion) and expressions such as wach men din? (which religion?). The same word also means a debt: 3lih ddin (he is in debt), sellefni u nrodlek ddin (lend me some, I'll pay you back). Only context distinguishes the two meanings. The register is everyday, with no particular connotation. Note: the form ddinek, in some curses, is an insult and has nothing to do with neutral usage.

لازم نحترمو الدين
lazem nehtarmou ddin
“We must respect religion.”
