fasl فصل

Algerian Darja · noun

“fasl” (فصل) is a noun in Algerian Darja meaning season of the year.

Meanings

  1. season of the year
  2. school term
  3. chapter (of a book)

Usage

Fasl first means the season: fasl e-chta (winter), fasl e-sif (summer), fasl e-rbi3 (spring), fasl el-khrif (autumn). It is readily used with the article and the name of the season, but in conversation people often just say fe-chta or fe-sif without fasl. At school, fasl means the term: fasl lewel, fasl tani, fasl tالت, and people talk about the term average. The sense of "chapter" belongs more to school or written register. Do not confuse it with the verb fassel, "to cut out (a garment)" or "to settle a question".
