fekker فكر
Algerian Darja · verb
“fekker” (فكر) is a verb in Algerian Darja meaning to remind (someone of something).
Meanings
- to remind (someone of something)
- to think, reflect
Usage
In Darja, fekker mainly means "to make someone remember, to remind". The person being reminded is the direct object: fekkerni, "remind me"; fekkertni fi yemma, "you made me think of my mother". To say "to remember", the reflexive form tfekker is used. The sense "to think, reflect" also exists, mostly in a register influenced by Standard Arabic (fekker fi machrou3, "he thought about a project"); in everyday conversation, khemmem is preferred. Pitfall: don't systematically translate it as "to think".
Example
فكّرني غدوة نخلّص الضو.
fekkerni ghedwa nkhelles ddaw.
“Remind me to pay the electricity bill tomorrow.”
