frach فراش
Algerian Darja · noun
“frach” (فراش) is a noun in Algerian Darja meaning bed, place to sleep.
Meanings
- bed, place to sleep
- bedding, mattress
Usage
Frach refers to the place where one sleeps: the bed, or more broadly bedding (mattress, blankets). It does not correspond to French "meubles" (furniture), despite some glosses. One says tah fel frach (he fell ill, he is bedridden) and 3la frach el mout (on his deathbed), a frequent phrase when asking for prayers for a sick person. Tweb el frach means "to fold or put away the bedding". The word is very common and neutral in register, and also appears in expressions about laziness: ma inod mel frach (he doesn't get out of bed).
Example
راهو مريض، راقد في الفراش من البارح
rahou mrid, raqed fel frach mel barah
