ghadi غادي
Algerian Darja · particle
“ghadi” (غادي) is a particle in Algerian Darja meaning future marker (going to + verb).
Meanings
- future marker (going to + verb)
- going, heading
- over there (regional)
Usage
In western Algeria, ghadi serves mainly as a future marker before a conjugated verb: ghadi nroh ("I'm going to leave"). It then corresponds to "going to" + infinitive in English. It can also mean "going", as a participle synonymous with rayeh. The feminine is ghadya and the plural ghadyin. In other regions, notably in the east, ghadi is rather an adverb meaning "over there". Context therefore decides which use is meant. The word belongs to the informal register.
Example
غادي نروح للسوق ونولي
ghadi nrou7 lsouq w nwelli
“I'm going to go to the market and I'll be back.”
