“kas” (كاس) is a noun in Algerian Darja meaning drinking glass.

Meanings

  1. drinking glass
  2. cup, sports trophy

Usage

Kas refers first of all to the drinking glass, especially the small tea glass. One says "kas atay" (a glass of tea), "kas ma" (a glass of water) or "kas 9ahwa" (a glass of coffee). In sport, the same word means the cup and the competition itself: "kas l3alam" (the World Cup), "kas l3arab" (the Arab Cup). Context is usually enough to tell the two meanings apart. The common plural is kisan. Note that the word is not used for a cup with a handle, which is rather called fenjal or tasse.
