mars مارس

Algerian Darja · noun

“mars” (مارس) is a noun in Algerian Darja meaning March (month of the year).

Meanings

  1. March (month of the year)

Usage

In Algeria, mars refers to the third month of the year. It is part of the series of month names taken from French and used in everyday life: jânvi, fivri, mars, avril, mai, juan, juillia, out, etc. It is often placed after fi or f: f mars, "in March". The same word written in Arabic can also be read as the Standard Arabic verb "to practise", but that sense belongs to the written or formal register and is not usual in darja. An English speaker will recognise it easily, with a pronunciation close to the French.
