mars مارس

Tunisian Derja · noun

“mars” (مارس) is a noun in Tunisian Derja meaning March (month).

Meanings

  1. March (month)

Usage

In Tunisia, the months of the Gregorian calendar are named after the French: janfi, fifri, mars, avril, mai, jouan, etc. Mars is therefore pronounced as in French and written مارس in Arabic. It is used without the article after a number: khamsa w 3echrin mars, "the twenty-fifth of March". Be careful in writing: the same Arabic spelling also corresponds to the Standard Arabic verb mares, "to practise, to exercise". This verb belongs to a formal or journalistic register. It is not really used in everyday derja, where people say "ya3mel" or "ychadd" instead.

Example

نرجعو نهار عشرة مارس

nraj3ou nhar 3achra mars

“We're coming back on the tenth of March.”
