msid المسيد

Algerian Darja · noun

“msid” (المسيد) is a noun in Algerian Darja meaning school (mainly primary), informal.

Meanings

  1. school (mainly primary), informal
  2. Quranic school
  3. traditional Quranic school

Usage

Msid (often el msid with the article) first refers to the Quranic school, where children learn the Quran. In everyday speech, many people also use it for school in general, especially children's school, in an informal or affectionate, sometimes ironic tone. People say "rouh lel msid" (go to school) or "bnat el msid" (schoolgirls). The word remains more colloquial than "lmekteb" or "lmadrassa". Depending on the context, it can therefore refer to the religious school or the ordinary school. In a serious text, it is better to specify which school is meant.

Example

الذراري راحو للمسيد بكري

ed-drari raho lel msid bekri
