msid مسيد
Moroccan Darija · noun
“msid” (مسيد) is a noun in Moroccan Darija meaning traditional Quranic school.
Meanings
- traditional Quranic school
- neighbourhood place of religious teaching
Usage
The msid is the traditional Quranic school. Young children learn to read and memorise the Quran there, often before primary school or alongside it. The teacher is called lfqih. Pupils write on a wooden tablet, the lluḥa. People say mcha l lmsid "he went to the msid" and 9ra f lmsid "he studied at the msid". For many Moroccans the word recalls a childhood memory. Do not confuse it with jame3 "mosque" or with lmedrasa, which means the modern school.
