rfed رفض

Algerian Darja · verb

“rfed” (رفض) is a verb in Algerian Darja meaning to refuse, say no.

Meanings

  1. to refuse, say no
  2. to reject (request, application)
  3. refusal, rejection

Usage

Rfed means to refuse or to reject. It is conjugated like a regular verb: rfedt (I refused), yerfed (he refuses). It is used for a person who says no ("babaha rfed", her father refused) as well as for an administration (visa, application). The corresponding noun, "rafd", is used mostly in administrative language. In casual speech, refusal is often expressed with "ma bghach" or "ma hebch" (he didn't want to), which sound more natural than rfed in small everyday situations. Rfed keeps a firmer, even official, nuance.

Example

طلبتها للزواج بصح باباها رفض

tlebtha lzwaj bessah babaha rfed

“I asked to marry her, but her father refused.”
