tkhalass تخلص
Algerian Darja · verb
“tkhalass” (تخلص) is a verb in Algerian Darja meaning to get paid, receive one's salary.
Meanings
- to get paid, receive one's salary
- to get rid of
Usage
In Algeria, tkhalles is mostly heard in the sense of "to be paid", the passive of khalles (to pay). Tkhallest? means "were you paid?", and nkhalles ma nkhalles depends on context: the vocalization and form distinguish "to pay" (khalles) from "to be paid" (tkhalles), a pitfall in writing where the two are often confused. It is used for a salary, a bonus or other pay: tkhallesna l-yom (we got paid today). The sense "to get rid of" (tkhallas men), inherited from standard Arabic, exists but is rarer and more formal; people then often prefer to say "fekk rouhou men".
Example
الخدامين مازال ما تخلصوش هاد الشهر.
lkhaddamin mazal ma tkhalsouch had ccher.
“The employees still haven't been paid this month.”
