tkhelles تخلّص
Moroccan Darija · verb
“tkhelles” (تخلّص) is a verb in Moroccan Darija meaning to get paid, receive one's salary.
Meanings
- to get paid, receive one's salary
- to get rid of
Usage
Tkhelles is the reflexive or passive form of khelless, "to pay". In Morocco, its most common meaning is "to be paid", for example in tkhellessti had ch-chhar?, "were you paid this month?". With men, it means "to get rid of". This second sense is more formal and closer to Standard Arabic. Pitfall: the form t-khelless, "you pay" or "she pays", is written exactly the same way. Only context tells the two apart.
Example
واش تخلّصتي هاد الشهر؟
wach tkhelleSti had chhar?
“Did you get paid this month?”
