Algerian Darja · verb
“ye7ayed” (يحايد) is a verb in Algerian Darja meaning to remove, take off.
Meanings
- to remove, take off
- to move aside, push away
- to move over, get out of the way
Usage
7ayed is a very common verb throughout Algeria. With an object, it means to take something away: 7ayed sabbatek (take off your shoes), 7ayed hadi men hna (get this out of here). It is also used for a piece of clothing, an obstructing object or a stain. Without an object, it means "to move over": 7ayed! means "move over!", often in an informal, even brusque tone. One also says 7ayed men triq, "get out of the way". Note that this verb has nothing to do with the idea of neutrality suggested by the similar word in Standard Arabic.
Example
حيّد صبّاطك قبل ما تدخل
7ayed sabbatek 9bel ma tedkhol
“Take off your shoes before you come in.”
