7izb حزب
Moroccan Darija · noun
“7izb” (حزب) is a noun in Moroccan Darija meaning political party.
Meanings
- political party
- hizb, section of the Quran
Usage
7izb first means a political party: "7izb dyal l7okouma" (the party in power), "dkhel l chi 7izb" (to join a party). The plural is a7zab. The word also has a religious sense that is very much alive in Morocco. It refers to a section of the Quran, the Book being divided into sixty ahzab, and in particular to the daily collective recitation in mosques, called "l7izb". People say "qra l7izb" (to recite the hizb). Context always makes it possible to tell the two senses apart. The usual pronunciation is 7izb or 7zeb.
Example
هاد الحزب ربح الانتخابات.
had l7izb rbe7 l'intikhabat.
“This party won the elections.”
