dini ديني

Moroccan Darija · adjective

“dini” (ديني) is an adjective in Moroccan Darija meaning religious, relating to religion.

Meanings

  1. religious, relating to religion

Usage

Dini is the adjective formed from din (religion). It describes things, not people: a programme, a festival, an upbringing (t-terbiya d-diniya). The feminine is diniya. For a pious person, people rather say mtdeyyen or "tay-ṣelli". Beware of an important pitfall: in writing, dini or ddini very often means "take me". This word is formed from the verb dda (to take along) followed by -ni (me), as in ddini l d-dar, "take me home". Online, this verbal meaning is in fact the most frequent.
